The BBC was looking to further license its intellectual property and create richer online and mobile games and gaming entertainment content through a new team and brand.Following a competitive pitch, we were selected as the BBCs branding agency to create the name, brand identity, launch and brand activation.TransformationOur open creativity process was central to the BBC’s decision to appoint Bert as its branding agency. We worked together with the in-house team through our three-stage Clarify, Create and Connect brand creation programme. Our Clarify sprints at the BBC’s Media City headquarters we uncovered the strengths of the BBCs brand when addressing a gaming audience. We also highlighted a series of perceived weaknesses, which - if remaining unchecked - could prevent the brand from gaining traction.Through a series of immersive Create stage sprints we CoCreated a name and new brand identity. And we activated the brand through an omni-channel launch programme using our Connect sprint programme. Our naming team worked with the BBC’s in-house gaming team to create ‘Open Games’. We created a narrative that simplified the premise, explaining that Open Games connects the world’s leading games developers with some of the best loved media brands on the planet.CoCreating from Media City, the narrative was brought to life in rich digital form. The animated logo, embodying the Open Games portal, creates a unique way for multiple brands to share the limelight on communications. The ‘O’ dynamically wraps around the content within, resulting in a new brand capable of pairing with globally recognised media brands including Match of the Day, Top Gear and The Octonauts. We designed an immersive online portal and experience for digital creators. The new name and narrative identity played a significant role in shaping the web and mobile experience. The site is a central portal, connecting the world’s leading developers and creators with some of the world’s most-loved entertainment titles.“Since relocating to Media City, Bert ranks amongst the very best partners we’ve worked with.”Karl Hughes, BBC Project Director. ‍GrowthWe created extensive guidelines for the BBC to support the internal studio and content creation teams in creation on-brand Open Games activation materials and content. The marketing team approached us to review its brand narrative and visual identity.Brabners is a UK top 100 law firm, ranks in The Legal 500 in 22 separate practice areas and 21 Brabners lawyers have been named in the elite “Leading Lawyers” list. Although our research revealed strong name awareness, few audiences understood the sheer scope of Brabners’ service offering or the excellence of its work.TransformationWe created a clear brand strategy and narrative built on the corporate strategy and detailed audience personas. We positioned Brabners as ‘Commercial Lawyers for Ambitious Business’, and created its purpose as ‘Realising Ambition’ – which helped unify commercial and consumer messaging for the first time. New values, propositions, and a tone of voice cascaded from this purpose. We also sought case studies and developed thought leadership campaigns to evidence the propositions and bring the brand to life. The visual identity was refined, evolving the logo mark to make it more distinctive and improve performance on digital platforms. A stronger, highly distinctive colour system was created around Brabners Bronze and Brabners Blue to cut through the ubiquitous competitor palettes. Fonts were improved, with ITC Caslon combined with Akkurat to pair statesman-like elegance with contemporary Swiss pragmatism. And a bespoke, unique grid-system was created that flowed across digital and print platforms. We then developed campaigns based on Realising Ambitions for Brabners’ lead sectors. We also celebrated its second centenary through the ‘200 years of Ambition’ campaign.Growth Our work for Brabners has impacted every aspect of its business.Like for like revenues in the first financial year following our work grew to £29.2m and fee income grew across all core service areas.‍‍Share-XLinkedInFacebookCopy LinkNo items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found.Let’s create the greatest work of our lives.Get in touch --- ### Page: https://www.bertagency.co.uk/our-work/brighter-sound Title: Brighter Sound | Our Work Language: en Canonical URL: https://www.bertagency.co.uk/our-work/brighter-sound ## Headings Structure: H1: Brighter Sound H2: Brighter Sound, Brand Identity H3: The Situation H3: The Change H3: The Growth: H2: Brighter Sound, Brand Identity H3: The Situation H3: The Change H3: The Growth: H2: Let’s create the greatest work of our lives. For more than two decades, Brighter Sound has been supporting young musicians, emerging artists, and industry professionals in discovering and elevating their potential. However, they sensed that their identity was holding them back. The brand had little depth, had become fragmented and appeared outdated. After review it became clear a stronger identity could propel Brighter Sound to national significance and would help deepen connections at all levels of the music industry. Our task was to codify the Brighter Sound brand to unlock future growth."We are already seeing the value of your inspiring work. It focussed our thinking and expanded our horizons. It was vital in helping us become an NPO and has helped with our fundraising across the board.”Debra King, Director, Brighter SoundThe ChangeWe immersed ourselves in the world of Brighter Sound, attending gigs, workshops and event. We brought leading industry professionals from the likes of Sony Music together with emerging artists and Brighter Sound employees in open creativity sessions. The work uncovered that Brighter Sound is unique in helping individuals, groups and organisations find their sound and create the necessary rhythm to build their musical career. ‘Find your rhythm’ formed the core of the new Brighter Sound narrative. The visual identity system brought this to life through a dynamic, expressive animated logo mark. The visual identity becomes more energetic with each layer, with the palette, photography, textures and signifiers creating a flexible yet distinctive visual identity packed with meaning. The brand was unveiled at a series of live gigs, through Brighter Sound’s new website, at industry events, through social and via campaigns. The Growth:The brand strategy and narrative was immediately put to work. It helped shape and win the bid for Brighter Sound to become a National Portfolio Organisation (NPO). Established in 1894 City's longevity is in part due to its success in adapting to the changing needs of students. Our brief was to work with City Student Union to enhance engagement with the Union and enhance the student experience. Research revealed that many students failed to see the relevance of the Union and didn't understand its role or offering. City SU is a Bert Passion Project. The ChangeAlmost 1,700 students responded to the research that would form the basis of our Clarify report. Whilst participation in gigs and large-scale events was healthy, students highlighted a need for support in making the every day student experience better. This was a role the Union could fulfil if the issues around its identity were overcome. The purpose 'Make Every Day Better' was developed in open creativity sessions with students and leaders. This was supported by work that neatened the City University of London Students Union name to City SU, identified values and built the brand's propositions. The visual identity was born from the narrative and detailed research. The logo mark references the condensed name, and was carefully tested and refined through audience engagement. This is paired with a vibrant palette, which references King Carrot, the original University mascot with origins dating back to the early 20th century. Custom animation, photography and additional design signifiers combine to create a distinctive, desirable visual identity that is packed with meaning. The brand was completed to launch at the Freshers' Fair and is now present at gigs and events, live sports matches, on the City SU website and social campaigns. The GrowthThe new identity had had an immediate impact, helping record level engagement and participation in City SU events and daily activity. It has also helped the leadership team organise and structure its diverse service offering. We chose Bert as they'd worked in our sector and are best-in-breed brand specialists. They blend creativity, strategic thinking and are natural collaborators. Our team were involved throughout and loved the work way before it launched. Following our successful work with York Museums Trust, a project which united the identities of five previously distinct venues, we were commissioned to create CoCA's brand identity prior to its public opening. SolutionDuring our Clarify process we discovered that York is the only complete medieval walled city in England. With its recognisable medieval street pattern, 2,000 years of unbroken urban development, the largest concentration of designated heritage assets in England, and its well preserved archaeological deposits, it is a awe-inspiring place. By researching York's design history we learned of the city's double-hexagonal stable paviours, known locally as Rosemary Setts, which adorned York's historic 'ginnels' and alley-ways .The dedication to creating these unique masonry setts, which were produced in the tens of thousands, became a central theme for the identity of CoCA. The hexagonal shape formed the basis of the logo and has since been adopted as a design feature on the exterior of the gallery, with more than 300 double hexagonally shaped tiles fitted to CoCA’s exterior. GrowthWe were commissioned to create the launch campaign for CoCA and the digital initiative to exhibit the entire collection online.CoCA has grown to become one of the UK's most popular ceramics galleries. It has gained recognition in publications ranging from the New York Times to the Guardian and today contains the work of over 600 artists and in excess of 5,500 objects. The development aimed to accentuate innovation, luxury, and its prime location steeped in the rich history of cricket.Corkfield represents an extension of the existing city centre Build to Rent offerings and is poised to attract younger professionals from the city.“From inception to delivery, the team at Bert have a single focus – delivering our brief, not their agenda. There are no egos involved". ‍We were selected as the brand and digital partner for Patrizia, working alongside their talented team to bring the Corkfield brand to life. ‍TransformationConverting a plot into an aspirational brand prior to realisation demanded meticulous work. We engaged architects in the process and collaborated extensively with the teams at Patrizia and Native. We attended events at the Midlands Arts Centre opposite the site, observing activities in the park and collaborating with photographers to capture the essence of how people would live and work in the space. Our responsibility was to authentically bring this vision to life. Recognising that people would be investing a significant portion of their hard-earned wages, it was imperative to accurately portray the interior of the buildings, depict the lifestyle within the space, and illustrate the potential for leisure and enjoyment outside of it. While this might seem casual, it's a crucial aspect of our work that we take extremely seriously. We discovered that the plot is ideally situated in the heart of leafy Edgbaston. With 200 acres of stunning parkland, a cinema, gallery, and an array of exceptional places to eat, drink, and shop within easy reach, it's evident why Edgbaston is consistently listed as one of the UK's premier places to live.Adjacent to Edgbaston Stadium, one of the world's most renowned and prestigious cricket grounds, the sights and sounds of the stadium would be the primary attraction for some residents, while others would consider it a secondary benefit. Our role was to establish a connection between Edgbaston and the development without making it the sole focal point. The site was previously open grazing land with the aim of building a cricket ground that would become a centrepiece for the community. We delved into the significance of this, exploring the emergence of cricket in the area and uncovering the essence of the sport itself. A tightly bound ball of cork sits at the heart of a cricket ball, which when paired with the site's history gave birth to the new name. Corkfield was conceived, a subtle nod to cricket that's both visible to those seeking the connection and attractive to those who might not recognise it.We then developed the brand strategy, narrative and visual identity. Engaging in extensive discussions with architects and Patrizia, we utilised a small number of CGIs to illustrate the development, highlighting its focus on wellbeing, health, and meticulous attention to detail. Site visits to other BTR schemes aided our understanding of the vision and how Corkfield would stand out."Bert balance their exceptional creative capability with attention to detail and vast experience."‍Our visual identity centred on wellness. We created a simple wordmark paired with a colour scheme derived from photographic research conducted on-site, capturing the hues of the evening sky on warm summer nights. Complemented by organic shapes and natural language, it encapsulated the warm, invigorating essence of wholesome living and the enchantment of the golden hour. The brand was officially launched at an event hosted at the neighbouring MAC, covered by Channel 4 as part of the sponsorship for Grayson Perry's Art Club. Additionally, the hoarding showcased the lead artist, Maryam Wahid, and her outdoor photography exhibition, featuring portraits of people living in the Commonwealth. This was timely, aligning with the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.Growth“Take-up of the apartments has been brisk. More than 800 people are expected to live at Corkfield and we look forward to building a vibrant new community here.”Olivia Seaton, Asset Manager, PATRIZIA Corkfield was named Development of the Year at the prestigious Insider Residential Property Awards, and was awarded ‘Best Lead to Lease Journey’ in the BTR category at the Homeviews Awards, just 3 months after opening its doors.."Bert know how to create brands, like Corkfield, that deliver tangible growth."‍Richard Scutt, Director - Real Estate Development, Patrizia.‍Share-XLinkedInFacebookCopy LinkNo items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items fo --- ### Page: https://www.bertagency.co.uk/our-work/cruk Title: Re-Write Cancer | Our Work Meta Description: Explore how Bert worked with Cancer Research UK, the world’s largest research charity. The campaign raises awareness and funds for a new £150m building in Manchester, which will become one of the world’s top-five cancer research centres.TransformationThrough immersion, site visits and creative exploration we learned how the research centre would allow for the acceleration of treatment, positively impacting upon the lives of millions cancer patients worldwide. Our CoCreation process helped engage and creatively align the three key campaign partners, Cancer Research UK, The Christie NHS and The University of Manchester. We built the brand together, using our collective experience, expertise and patient and partner insights to create everything from the name through to the campaign collateral. To create positive change we wanted audiences to roll-up their sleeves and involved. The narrative was created, tested and then enhanced by printing the word 'cancer' over and over again, providing Sharpies, and getting audiences to literally re-write cancer. Through this process we saw cancer’s meaning changed, adapted, finished early and crossed-out. This simple idea became central to the narrative and tone of voice. We continued to apply this informality to the brand and create a story of reinvention and renewal. The visual identity centres on the positive intervention made by individuals and collaborators in the fight against cancer. Bright bursts of hand-drawn colour over familiar health sector hues encourage audiences to get hands-on and create the change. The palette also represents the three key partners equally whilst helping form a new, unique identity. An aim to transform complex messaging into simple, engaging communications helped shape channel choice and content. We created animated shorts to explain the impact everyday individuals could have in re-writing the future of cancer. The shorts aired on social channels and became part of a targeted campaign. The campaign has been extended to include direct marketing, targeted communications to funders and high-net-worth individuals, digital, social and outdoor advertising. Our art direction and creative guidance also encouraged teams within the partner organisations imagine new ways to help audiences re-write cancer. This led to imaginative executions such as an engraved bench dedicated to legendary DJ Mark Radcliffe. Rather than carrying a traditional ‘in memoriam’ message, Mark’s bench reads: “Mark Radcliffe loved sitting here… and still does thanks to advances in cancer research.” This positive reframing underpins all campaign creative, which also includes giant hoardings, pledge walls, fundraising packs and interactive direct marketing.GrowthWe reframed cancer, helping replace fear with the knowledge that a future free of cancer is achievable within decades - if we work together. Our narrative and visual identity encourage people to walk towards the issue and tackle it through hands-on intervention and collaboration. Started simply as a means to fund owner Claudio’s passion for skydiving. As you might expect with such an accidental brand, it has evolved without consistency, so Bert was invited to help bring the brand to life. Our challenge was to create a brand identity that captures the warmth, authenticity and laid-back charm that customers love about a visit to Federal.TransformationTo fully understand the Federal brand, we immersed ourselves in their unique, community-focused atmosphere by regularly visiting the café, experiencing their amazing brunch and enjoying their coffee. We worked in close collaboration with the Federal team using our CoCreation method to understand what makes Federal so unique and to understand their reason for existing, which formed the basis of the narrative and visual identity. Our CoCreation process defined the key themes that make Federal so unique: pride, community, being welcoming and the mantra of 'if we're not proud we're not done'.We created the essence of 'Antipodean Brunch Masters' which formed the foundation of the identity. The visual ID retains the rawness of a real independent, allowing for individual expression and flexibility. It uses hand-drawn elements and illustrations to add heaps of character and allow the brand’s personality to shine through. The redesigned logo captures Federal's easy going nature, portraying a wave or flag flying in a warm summer breeze.GrowthFederal is much more than a coffee shop and cafe, it has created its own community in the heart of Manchester. So much so, that Aussie and Kiwi natives say it feels like home.Federal’s brunch menu – featuring only high-quality, fresh ingredients from local suppliers – has become so popular that they’ve amassed 60kInstagram followers, get 400k monthly searches and 1.1m TikTok views. Working under Jane Packer he developed a national reputation and opened Frog, his floral artistry studio in Manchester’s Northern Quarter.Ahead of opening its first retail store, FROG contacted us to help reimagine its brand. Our work began with immersion into FROG’s business and brand. The time spent with Frog’s team in the studio, warehouse and floristry school helped us understand the unique culture, processes and artistry that has become synonymous with the Frog brand. We created a detailed co-creation programme that engaged the FROG team and key clientele in the creative process.TransformationBy broadening our collective perspective, gathering global reference and research and pairing it with an internal exploration of everything FROG is and could become, we were able to help Frog distil its brand into three words; ‘uncontrived; joyful; unexpected.’This first step created a platform upon which everything else was created, from brand strategy through to the visual identity. We created a brand that harmonises and enhances everything FROG is and does.Only a small proportion of FROG's customers experience the studio or flower school. We therefore wanted to ensure the visual identity encapsulated the entire brand experience. The new visual identity system allows Frog to extend its bold personality to a wider audience. Every aspect of the brand identity has been designed to embody the founder's unique blend of high-artistry and love for the unexpected / whimsical. The hand-crafted logo mixes curved cross-bars with sharp apexes, creating an utterly unique mark that delivers unorthodox balance. This is paired with a bold use of colour, distinguishing the brand from the minimalist, monochrome aesthetic synonymous with the industry. Interchangeable typography, brand signifiers, playful art direction and animation support the core elements to create a complete visual identity system.Following research into the digital behaviours and expectations of audiences, the new FROG website has been designed to be ‘mobile first’. Communicating the breadth of FROG’s offer on mobile was the central to the challenge; from brand collaborations and giant installations, through to the Flower School and weddings. Equally the upcoming retail store and bookings platform had to be delivered beautifully on the smallest of screens.Social templates and design kits were also delivered for use by the in-house team. The solution allows FROG complete control over its online experience, whilst also delivering a strong representation of the brand online. Our art-direction conveys FROG’s love for creating unexpected moments of joy through inventive and elegant design, language and photography. From created still-life to art-inspired fashion shoots, FROG imagery entertains and aims to convey an existence that scores high on both aesthetic and enjoyment. To complete the brand experience, stunning packaging was created ahead of FROG’s Selfridges UK retail launch, from grab-and-go bouquet wraps, care labels and guides through to high-value cylindrical gift packaging. As with all identity systems, the brand experience is best enjoyed whole - either in-store, in studio or at the Floral School.Packaging is used to create a retail environment in Selfridges stores that delivers brand experience first with the expected aspects of a visual identity system, logo, colour, narrative, messaging playing a secondary role.In-store and studio, neon hits uncomplicated beech plywood and spectacular natural floral artistry buts up against metals powder-coated with fluorescents to create a joyful, uncontrived and unexpected experience.‍‍‍Share-XLinkedInFacebookCopy LinkNo items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found.Let’s create the greatest work of our lives.Get in touch --- ### Page: https://www.bertagency.co.uk/our-work/hatch Title: Hatch | Our Work Meta Description: Read how Bert worked with Hatch, a new concept in retail, leisure and food and beverage, to create their identity and bring their concept to life. But the brief to Bert stipulated that this brand should be different to that iconic shopping emporium. This brand should be modern, unconventional, energetic and bold.We were tasked with bringing this concept to life before building even began.TransformationCreatively, the project offered rich inspiration: an atmospheric location under Manchester’s iconic Mancunian Way flyover; architecturally fascinating, with steel shipping containers clustered around an inviting secret courtyard; and exciting new ventures from independent retailers set to launch each week.We began by imagining the name, Hatch, inspired by street food vendors and all the great new ideas and businesses hatching out of the place. Then we continued to hone the concept, establishing a brand strategy and visual identity for everything from the physical space to brand launch campaigns.GrowthThe Hatch story is a success; the place has already proved to be a phenomenon, with the Hatch team taking home the award for the pop up event or project of the year at the Manchester Food & Drink Festival Awards 2018.The huge pent-up demand in this part of the city for stylish, independent retail has resulted in enormous footfall, successful trading and a long waiting list of hopefuls eager to try out their own ideas in the Hatch space.‍Share-XLinkedInFacebookCopy LinkNo items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found.Let’s create the greatest work of our lives.Get in touch --- ### Page: https://www.bertagency.co.uk/our-work/health-assured Title: Health Assured | Our Work Meta Description: See how Bert worked with Health Assured, a leading provider of employee assistance programmes, to create their brand identity, narrative and collateral. By day, it serves lunches from its outdoor beach kitchen, while on selected summer evenings it hosts open-air feast nights. The food is exceptional, sourced from the surrounding land and sea, and crafted by Simon Stallard, regarded by many as the world’s leading outdoor grill chef. The Hidden Hut founders approached us to create its identity, website and product range. TransformationIt was no chore for the team to immerse themselves in the Cornish way of life. Staying in the village, dining with the founders, sipping coffee with the locals and dipping into the cool waters of the English Channel. Over time, and through countless conversations, we began to understand the Hut’s magic. Once discovered, the Hidden Hut delivers a dining experience which most people describe as the most memorable of their lives. We got to work by drawing a symbol that tells the Hut’s story. For almost a century the Hut has happily played second-fiddle to its surroundings, humbly blending into the background to allow the dramatic coastline to take centre stage. After years of obscure uses, the Hut has now found its calling, to restore to the wild-swimmers, walkers, locals and beatnik travellers who visit come day, night, rain or shine. The logo is supported with a hand-drawn word-mark. These elements are complemented by a core palette that’s able to adjust between dusk and daylight and a limited set of secondary visual components to continue the brand’s homespun charm. This purposefully direct approach conveys the Hut’s humility. It is then juxtaposed with stills and motion taken by legendary photographer Danny North (fresh from shooting the Foo Fighters, Blossoms, and Lewis Hamilton). His work perfectly captures the show’s real star, the drama of the grill in one of the planet’s most spectacular settings. GrowthThe Hut has amassed a huge following, with over 10,000 applications for every Feast Night (which usually cater for under 70 people). Regulars, locals, celebrities, billionaires and foodies all dine together on the beach, connecting in the extraordinary setting. The identity has been executed across wayfinding posts along the rough coastal path, on the Hut’s ramshackled exterior, on kraft brown-paper bowls filled with warm chowder and soups, and on a crisp new range of Hidden Hut merchandise that will satisfy the tens of thousands of annual visitors desperate to take a slice of the greatest meal of their lives home. ‍Jemma Glass, Co-Founder says:"Bert immersed themselves in our world and captured the essence of the Hut perfectly in their work. We’re often approached to collaborate by global brands, but previously lacked the confidence in our identity to make it happen. We’ve now got a brand capable of matching the Hut’s incredible appeal and potential."* Danny North is one of Britain’s most celebrated music photographers. Independent research confirmed this belief and highlighted specific parts of the brand experience that had become misaligned with audience expectations. We paired this insight with immersion sessions at Junkyard Golf Club and competitor venues and explored international trends shaping social competition. The ChangeWe used our open creativity methodology to immerse the leadership and wider teams in the entire transformation process. Open creativity workshops and customer insights highlighted the disconnect between the current tone-of-voice and expectations. Concerns over the relevance of the narrative were also expressed by employees, who felt it was becoming hard to express authentically.Retro puns were dialled back and outdated abbreviations and fads were removed. The role of language was transformed to better explain, reflect and augment the overall JYGC experience. The updated narrative then informed the visual identity. Our work centred on customer insights that showed new audiences wanted a stronger feel for the experience before they booked; and that an increasingly competitive marketplace was making it harder for Junkyard Golf Club to stand out. The old logo’s size and complexity rendered it hard to use on motion-led digital platforms such as TikTok and Instagram. Through open creativity workshops we created an entirely new visual identity system that would overcome these issues. The solution centres on a new logo built to be replicated at any size on any medium, and allows the logo and name to become a centre-point of communications. We stacked the lettering as a homage to pile 'em high junkyards. This also further emphasised each word in the already brilliant name. The colour system was designed to stand-out, combining vibrant colours to create an infinite set of on-brand landscapes. We also commissioned new photography in a direct response to audiences who had expressed that photography of the experience was key to their decision-making. Models and styling was inspired by user-generated content to help build an authentic view of the brand long-before visiting a venue. Detailed guidelines and assets were produced with delivery teams trained on the execution of the new brand. The identity was rolled-out across all venues, supported by creative out-of-home, digital advertising, PR and social campaigns. The GrowthThe new brand identity and strategy has helped Junkyard Golf Club's identity evolve from pop-up to scale-up and the new brand essence catalysed improvements across the business. Leading to exceptional customer-centric experiences across its seven UK sites. Sales at Junkyard Golf Club rose by 23.4% year-on-year with over 1.8 million games of crazy golf played in that period. The rebrand won silver for Best New / Improved Visual Identity at the Restaurant Marketer & Innovator Awards. Lauren Cassells, Head of Sales & Marketing said “We are going through an exciting transition and have created a brand that better reflects our customers and improves their experience. We started our work by listening to the founders, leadership and marketing teams. Wider consultation with team members from across the business helped inform the process, kickstarting a programme of engagement that ensured company-wide buy-in prior to launch. Detailed primary customer research, desktop assessments of the current brands’ performance and product testing helped further immerse our team into The Bazaar Group’s sumptuously soft world.‍The ChangeThe Group's passion for designing furniture that delivered next-level comfort shone through. It was matched by a boundless desire to deliver exceptional customer experiences. Everything they did aimed to make customers smile. The term 'Feel Good Furniture' was born, which underpinned the Group’s new strategic statements and narrative, which set a course for a confident new identity system.‘Mallo’ was then created, a bold, evocative new retail name which tested exceptionally well across Europe. The name’s onomatopoeic softness was amplified further through an original, hand-drawn wordmark crammed full of feel-good comfort. The name was also created to support a new brand hierarchy, with existing ranges Veeva and icon being sold under the Mallo retail brand. The great chemistry and energy between the Bert and Bazaar Group team made the creation process enjoyable, energetic and highly productive. Together we built a highly distinctive narrative, tone-of-voice and design system with enough flex to work across myriad touchpoints. The narrative was transcreated into both German and French, making Mallo unmissable whatever the channel, message or language. "The workshops they managed, and the depth in which they went to find uncover our existing brand DNA, in order to bring it out into the open and bring voice to something we couldn’t, was a pleasure to be a part of."We then created art direction for the e-commerce platforms, built social templates, devised internal and external launch plans and delivered core collateral to support the brand’s launch in Germany and France.‍The GrowthOver the past year, we’ve been privileged to work with The Bazaar Group's exceptional leadership and brand teams to create a new strategy and narrative that allows them to better express everything they do. It comprises the Etihad Stadium, the Academy Stadium, City Football Academy (CFA) training facility and the Club's headquarters. So when Manchester City approached Bert to design interactive experiences for its Campus Tour we jumped at the chance. The club was looking to enhance two specific areas of the tour; deeper engagement with fans and the football group’s global community projects; and an experience providing a chance for fans to create their dream playing squad from City’s stars across all eras.We created two interactive experiences for the Eithad Campus Tour; ‘Dream Teams’ and ‘Cityzens Community’.Both interactive solutions had to reflect Manchester City’s brand and communicate its values through both design and experience; fans first; a passion for football; community; originality; and future. The designs had to frame content from across the globe; and from different eras, creating significant challenges in ensuring a consistency in quality of experience. The result puts fans firmly in control, through simple, intuitive on-brand experiences.Reaction from the City team and, most importantly, fans was fantastic from launch. In addition both experiences were shortlisted for British Interactive Media Association (BIMA) awards. We created two interactive experiences, ‘Dream Teams’ and ‘Cityzens Community’ accessed by fans via giant touchscreens.Dream Teams allows fans to choose their all-time favourite City players & combine them into a single starting XI. The experience provides access to the information of hundreds of City legends, who can be dropped onto an interactive pitch, swapped and played in different positions. Multiple users can create Dream Teams, and can then share and compete their dream line-ups. The dream teams can can be shared via social to encourage debate and encourage more fans to take part.Cityzens Community displays an interactive global map, allowing fans to discover some of the great current and future projects that are making a difference the world over.GrowthWorking with Manchester City’s selected digital partner D2, and through Campus visits, research into player archives and digital exploration, we created outline concepts ready for digital CoCreation sessions with fans and project partners. These fan insights allowed us to iterate rapidly, creating prototypes which were subject to further exploration. CoCreation continued to shape the product until the final experiences were realised. We identified that the solutions should be simple, collaborative and open, in-line with the Club’s ‘community’ ethos. We set out to create experiences capable of engaging multiple fans concurrently. Our solution for both experiences was to create multi-touch, giant touchscreens - each capable of being played by individuals or ‘teams’.‍Share-XLinkedInFacebookCopy LinkNo items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found.Let’s create the greatest work of our lives.Get in touch --- ### Page: https://www.bertagency.co.uk/our-work/manchester-giants Title: Manchester Giants | Our Work Meta Description: Take a look at our campaign with Manchester Giants, Manchester’s local Basketball team. After a change of ownership it was decided that the time was right to update the club's brand identity and better reflect the new owner's vision for the future.TransformationRebranding sports teams can be one of the most difficult identity jobs to get right. Deep rooted history and the passion of fans aren't easy hurdles to navigate, so we knew from the start of the process that we'd need to bring in stakeholders from across the club's base to help us CoCreate the work. With that in mind, we set up a team of people that included not only club owner (and ex-Giant) Jamie Edwards, but also players, staff and fans, as well as other representatives from Greater Manchester such as local school teachers and events organisers.Despite only ever being able to meet digitally due to Coronavirus, the team were consulted throughout the process and they helped shape a direction that we could all be confident in.Through CoCreation sprints we helped the Giants develop a strategy that would elevate the club both on and off court. Incredible participation rates in the region at junior level show a love for the game exists, but the drop-off at adult level, the lack of a clear player pathway and an underdeveloped infrastructure would need to be unpicked for basketball’s potential in Greater Manchester (and the UK) to be realised. Our strategy to harness and further elevate the popularity of basketball has been articulated in the Giants’ new purpose statement. The statement balances the dual goals of transforming the game of basketball in Manchester and using basketball as a vehicle to create positive change throughout the region. A 10 x 10 community engagement plan was also realised, with first team Giants players being paired with each of Manchester’s 10 boroughs to drive community engagement. The accompanying visual identity further establishes the new direction for The Giants. One of the biggest steps taken was to update the colour palette so that it felt more sophisticated and usable across a wider range of applications. Whilst the recognisable bright green has been retained, in the new system it's treated as a highlight that draws attention instead of the being the core colour. A combination of a deep green and black allows the highlight to 'pop'. A secondary combination of a deep purple with a coral pink hints at another of the colours from the old identity and will be used for the Giants' away jerseys. In addition to the updated colour palette, we created Giants Jersey Sans which – as the name suggests – will be used on the jerseys as well as for core headings and statements. It's a font designed to be giant and is further emphasised with the GIANTS type that will sit across the chest of the player's jerseys. The design system ensures that all Giants' communication really feels 'gigantic'. With an emphasis on the GIANTS type, bold colour application and vibrant, real photography the primary aim is to create a sense of energy around the club that captures not only the excitement of seeing the Giants play, but also of the club's overall vision. The new vision for the Giants coincides with a new home for the Giants too. Moving to the National Basketball Performance Centre at Belle Vue means that the club now has a dedicated base. Taking reference from legend and literature, the space will be branded Giants Country and become a unifying home that inspires the players and the fans whilst reminding the opposition just what they're in for when they come to play.‍Share-XLinkedInFacebookCopy LinkNo items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found.Let’s create the greatest work of our lives.Get in touch --- ### Page: https://www.bertagency.co.uk/our-work/marlborough Title: Marlborough | Our Work Meta Description: Explore how Bert succesfully collaborated with Marlborough to bring together their multi-entity groups under the banner Marlborough Group. Managing over £10bn of assets and with over 250 employees in the UK across six sites, the group is a leading independent business within its sector. With changes to the regulatory landscape and an internal desire to rationalise the services offered to a broad range of audiences, the board and brand and marketing teams led an initiative to explore the merits of modernising the brand strategy and structure. We were invited to take part in a national, competitive pitch process to review each identity and make recommendations for growth.TransformationThis project required every ounce of our vast experience in working with complex, multi-entity groups and our knowledge of the financial services industry. Our journey began by engaging the board. During an off-site exploratory workshop we clarified the brief, objectives and vision for the business and brand. This helped establish the project's decision making team, who led on the key stages of the brand and business transformation. Through workshops and surveys which engaged over half of the workforce and depth interviews with partners, clients and wider stakeholders, we uncovered the company's secret sauce. The ingredients that had underpinned the company's spectacular growth since 1985 and made the business unique today. Marlborough's success had been driven by an absolute obsession with delivering for the customers. The attention to detail and willingness to innovate to enhance customer outcomes and experiences was unparalleled. Working closely with the company HR lead, we tested, refined and then set out to codify these ingredients in the form of a new company purpose, mission, values and culture code. The new purpose 'Difference Made' was born, a reflection of the company's philosophy that Marlborough is a place where big ideas and ambitions are made real. This purpose and strategic statements spanned the entire group, so naturally a detailed review of the brand hierarchy followed. Multiple models were explored and reviewed by client-side experts from a regulatory perspective, all with the goal of delivering the best outcomes for customers. The individual entities were simplified into a single brand, creating the Marlborough Group. The services under the group were rationalised giving audiences and employees greater visibility of the Group's capabilities. Group visuals were radically updated, recognising the need for an identity that matched the Group's size, importance and ambition. Difference Made can be seen in the logo. The traditional three pillars of finance (also representative of the Group's three core businesses) are disrupted at their midpoint, with each journey following a new, positive, upwards trajectory following Marlborough's engagement. The palette, typography and photography were carefully crafted to create a brand both rich in heritage and blazing a trail for the future of the industry. The project continued with the scoping, design and development of a Group-wide fund platform and website. The project is incredibly complex, guiding multiple audiences to tailored content and real-time information on hundreds of investment funds. The digital transformation project also included the development of dozens of microsites for partner organisations. The brand launched at an all-company event, premiering with a brand film and launch collateral. The new brand guidelines, which cover company narrative through to visual execution, have been used to successfully create films / animations, podcasts, digital and display ads, signage, in-environment assets and updates to a suite of presentations, investor guides, letters and communications that ran into the thousands."This was a huge project and we needed to find the right agency, so we conducted a UK-wide pitch process. Bert were different. Their process of CoCreation really stood out. As a group, we were committed to our rebrand and we knew that the whole business, not just the marketing team, would benefit from being involved in a deeply collaborative process. Bert were true to their word. They took us all on the rebrand journey and the process was engaging, challenging and very enjoyable. Most importantly, it resulted in an authentic new brand – one which resonates both internally and externally. We definitely made the right decision in choosing Bert. The key to their success is that they cared as much as we did."Nathan Glynn, Associate Director. Marlborough Group. The OSO range runs from the purest of extra virgin olive oils to outstanding honeys and a coffee that has a history dating back to Byzantium.Following months of R&D in the UK we established a pop-up studio on the outskirts of Larnaca. By observing fishermen at Kurion and the Akritori Bay, bee-keeping in Strovolos and a journey to the island’s only single estate olive grove in Kampia we began to truly understand the importance of these foods, which are crucial in almost all key stages of Cypriot life, from birth to the last rights. Following a competitive pitch process, Bert were selected as Ellenbrook's brand transformation and digital partners."Bert quickly proved themselves to be head and shoulders above most of their direct competitors. They speak a different language".‍The outdated identity was also failing to resonate with time-poor, ambitious landlords and was restricting the business geographically. Bert was appointed to help the business build an identity befitting the scale, ambition and service excellence of the business.‍TransformationOur process began with a series of interviews and co-creation workshops. In a homogenous service industry examples of real differentiation were almost impossible to find. Our search for insights and inspiration went global, both-in and outside the category, to discover how micro-innovations to the service proposition could differentiate the business. Insights from professional property investors made it clear that digital and service innovation paired with ‘boots-on-the-ground’ local knowledge and delivery was paramount in choosing an agent. In addition the North-West of the UK was fast-emerging as the UK’s leading rental market, attracting interest from international investors. These insights helped us reposition the business from a sales and lettings agency to a specialist property investment partner. The service proposition and narrative was developed, which led us to identifying the shortcomings of the current name. The name 'Parello' was created, a pairing of the word partner with the beginning of the old name. This was tested at length with audiences feeling the new name, paired with Parello’s stance as Property Investment Partners, better reflected the modern, innovative and inclusive business they experienced. Parello was adopted as the company’s new name, and was registered with social and premium domains sourced and secured. "Bert rapidly understood our challenges and aims and then created an identity that encapsulated everything we'd been thinking, but had struggled to express before."‍The logo was developed around the concept of opportunities made possible by Parello. The opening in the ‘o’ acts as a distinctive brand asset capable of housing imagery, colour and illustration. The palette and wider visual language represent the digital-native, dynamic and socially engaged brand Parello is today. The website underwent a complete redesign to provide a more informative, user-friendly, and immersive experience. And a comprehensive content strategy was implemented to better communicate the value unlocked by Parello's commitment to the highest standards in service design and delivery. The brand has also been executed at Parello’s stylish new HQ at 1 Bridgewater, a hub for drop-in landlord surgeries, industry talks and community events. See the work: www.parello.com"It was like being drop-shipped directly into our future. For over eight years we’ve been producing animated films and content to support some of the most significant exhibitions that Tate has to offer. In 2019, we supported the incredible 'van Gogh and Britain' exhibition, bringing together over 50 works by van Gogh to reveal how he was inspired by Britain and how he inspired British artists.TransformationWith each and every exhibition we support, we use open creativity as the vehicle to stimulate our ideas and thinking. We spend time understanding the artists, the story behind their collection, and what the focal points for each exhibition will be. We uncovered an opportunity to enhance Tate’s objective to encourage people to explore the way in which art is created, to help people develop their own creative potential. Van Gogh was known for his painterly style. His distinct use of colour; brush stroke, and texture was what made it so iconic. This inspired us to explore digital processes to show how a selection of his most famous paintings were created, and bring that to life through animation. Our exploration took us down an ambitious route, combining a painstaking digital process and frame-by-frame animation. We first had to take the original artwork, carefully removing a series of brush strokes to create a stripped back version of the painting. We then repeated this process over and over again to slowly strip the painting back to the canvas. Once this process was complete, we were able to take each new digital version of the painting and set them up frame-by-frame, in reverse, to give the impression of the painting being recreated in a series of strokes. Some of van Gogh's most famous works were brought together from around the world, and our work centred around his very own self portrait, Vincent van Gogh Self-Portrait Autumn 1889; Starry Night over the Rhône; and the very rarely lent Sunflowers from London’s National Gallery. We used our animations to create teaser and promotional films and content to help promote the exhibition through internal and external screens, and online. We also created supporting, static outdoor media and print collateral to share and promote the event, and reach the widest possible audience.‍Share-XLinkedInFacebookCopy LinkNo items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found.Let’s create the greatest work of our lives.Get in touch --- ### Page: https://www.bertagency.co.uk/our-work/thinc Title: Thinc | Our Work Meta Description: Discover how Bert co-created with Thinc, UK’s no.1 IT partner for SMEs to create brand identity, narrative, strategy, communication, motion, and web project. Following a competitive process Bert was appointed to support a strategic review of the brand and the role it could play in fuelling the company's growth. Our Clarify programme highlighted both the scale of the opportunity and the deficiencies of the current identity. All aspects of the identity required improvement, included the name which scored poorly in recall tests, the poorly defined propositions, and a visual identity system with no protectable assets, it was clear a significant shift was required in order to help the new owners fulfil the company's considerable potential. TransformationThe leadership team at Thinc embraced our open creativity process, from renaming through to the visual identity creation. This engagement helped elevate the work, but also ensured the risks inherent in rebranding and renaming an already successful brand were carefully mitigated.A dedicated project team, with representation from every Thinc department ensured deep engagement with the whole company. Our process also involved partners and customers at key stages of the project, to ensure the new brand was loved, even before its launch. Each aspect of the Thinc brand has been designed to seamlessly align with every other aspect of the identity system. This begins with the name. Thinc is an abbreviation of The Intelligent Company, which in turn features in the brand’s purpose ‘Creating Intelligent Companies’. Becoming an Intelligent Company is the goal for many Thinc clients and prospects, and the term is quickly becoming synonymous with Thinc and a valuable part of its intellectual property. The visual identity centres on the wordmark Thinc and the ‘Amplify’ symbol. The identity was created on Thinc’s belief that human potential can be elevated by automating routine processes; both intelligence and a digital impression of rotating cogs that drive industries forwards feature in the Amplify symbol. We created a series of brand signifiers to aid visual recognition of the brand and add depth to the identity system. The signifiers include an adaptive logomark, which morphs to communicate the core human behaviours proven to amplify business performance. The legacy website was re-imagined. The site is now brand-led, communicating Thinc first with key partner brands such as SAP, Sage, Microsoft and Kaspersky supporting the core proposition. Our content and social marketing team has developed detailed thought leadership campaigns to leverage Thinc’s Intelligent Companies intellectual property and to engage prospects.Social templates and design kits were also delivered for use by the in-house team.We planned, managed and directed a series location shoots with the Thinc team to create a library of brand images for use across all campaigns and collateral. The brand’s ‘amplifying human potential’ proposition is core to all Thinc brand photography. This shift from technology has helped differentiate Thinc and neatly communicates its story. The photography communicates the brand’s approach and values, showing Thinc colleagues in client and partner workplaces. The shots, although carefully composed, represent the consultative, hands-on approach of the Thinc team.Despite digital tools and channels driving the majority of brand interactions, print continues to play a vital role for the brand. A brand book has helped customers, prospects and colleagues engage with Thinc, and internal guides distributed by brand champions have been vital in generating support and engagement amongst all colleagues.GrowthOur relationship with Thinc has continued to grow alongside the business. We've supported and advised on all aspects of the brand's growth, from campaigns and content to helping design its new Manchester HQ.Thinc has recently opened its first international office at Toronto's prestigious MARS Waterfront, another sign of the company's ongoing commitment to investment and growth. ‍‍‍Share-XLinkedInFacebookCopy LinkNo items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found.Non soluta cumque quo hic iure sunt voluptatem. It provides these practitioners with the unique opportunity to connect and collaborate with a group of like-minded individuals through online content and a wide-ranging events calendar.Working in close collaboration with the TLN team, we explored the founding partner organisations' visual identity systems to find both common ground and areas of overlap. This helped lay the path for a unique brand identity that was both highly differentiated and relevant.TransformationAs the Thought Leadership Network is a place for professionals to come together and learn, debate and discuss ways of connecting with their audiences, we set about creating an identity that had a sense of communication at its heart. Using the basic symbol for communication – the speech bubble – we created a logo mark that conveys the core idea of conversation whilst simultaneously placing the N for network right in the centre of it through the negative space created. To accompany TLN's logo, we built an identity system that was easy to work with, but retained a sense of authority and trustworthiness that is to be expected from an organisation set up by the Financial Times and Longitude. The simple blue and white primary colour palette is intended to work seamlessly alongside the founding partners' logos with a series of bright highlight colours adding vibrancy. A focus on warm, quality, engaging event photography acts as the proof point for those interested in getting involved. We also worked with TLN to bring their brand to life online, creating a place to showcase their offering and allow people to become members and book onto TLN events. It was also a space for TLN to share their own thought leadership through their insights. TLN's Insights are detailed, expertly written long-form articles so we designed a system that allowed for user interactivity and engagement, creating a digital experience that is as rich as the content itself.‍Share-XLinkedInFacebookCopy LinkNo items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found. No items found.Let’s create the greatest work of our lives.Get in touch --- ### Page: https://www.bertagency.co.uk/journal/2025-internships-early-entries Title: Bert - 2025 Internships: Early Entries - Brand - Strategy - Campaigns Meta Description: Early entries for our Summer 2025 internship programme are now open. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players and electrical tin openers... Choose DIY and wondering who the fuck you are on a Sunday morning.” Irvine Welsh, Trainspotting. Like life, growth is something that every business leader appears to have chosen. It’s virtually baked into the boilerplate of a C-suite CV. But despite choosing it, growth remains elusive for many. An almost mystical objective that can be measured and monitored but never fully understood or tamed. Is our ability to grow defined by the economic, technological and human forces of the current time? Or can it be designed whatever the weather? Is growth luck? Or is it a choice?Through research and practice, we’ve identified that companies who design for growth outperform their markets. But how are they doing this? And what levers can they pull? Choosing growth“In this world you’re either growing or you’re dying. So get in motion and grow.” Football coach and author Lou Holtz.Perhaps the largest and most credible study into this topic in recent times comes from the US. PwC analysed data from 2020 to 2022 for almost 2,700 US public companies with annual revenues exceeding $200 million in over 40 subsectors. Of these companies, around 425 (15%) outperformed their competitors. They achieved this by designing and driving sustainable growth. Two of the four key traits these companies shared were driven by brand and marketing departments. These businesses had a better understanding of their customers than competitors, and they better served their needs through improved service, personalisation and digital delivery. Designing growth“Creativity is the most powerful force ever harnessed. Without it, we’d still be kicking rocks in a pitch-black cave somewhere.”Adam Kerj, CCO at Accenture Interactive and Jury President in Digital Marketing at D&AD Awards. If there’s a single takeaway lesson from the PwC report, it’s this: Growth is a choice by the leadership. But it is designed by the company. The word design is, of course, particularly interesting to us. Creative professionals are often on the receiving end of business strategies. But mounting evidence suggests that creativity is one of the most important factors in designing and delivering growth. In Adobe’s ‘How Creativity Impacts Business’ report, companies that foster creativity are 3.5x more likely to outperform their peers in terms of revenue growth. Unsurprisingly, McKinsey has also produced its own research into how growth can be created. Focussing on the leader rather than the company, it identified the beliefs and behaviours of those who drive healthy, sustainable growth. Many of the core characteristics identified can be best designed by brand-minded leaders. These leaders set out bold ambitions and inspire others to join them in achieving extraordinary things. They create the culture, environment and focus required, and equip their teams with the confidence, clarity and tools to excel in their work. These leaders then unite all minds and align all resources towards achieving the stated idea, providing people with clarity on their role in achieving something greater than they could in isolation. They also remind, reinforce and occasionally jolt their organisation to keep it on track, keeping an eye on external change that requires subtle adaptation. It’s important to not overstate the role of brand and creativity, as the industry has done too often. But it’s important not to underestimate its power either. This is best summed up by Adam Kerj, who we quoted at the beginning of this section: “... we should be beyond proud of what role we play and can do considering that creativity is by far the world’s most significant economic multiplier.”Catalysing growth{{quote}}It’s widely known that inertia kills companies. But so too does change. Leaders can become dizzy with the pursuit of ‘finding our purpose’, or mired in an endless cycle of transformation – unsure of the past yet hesitant to embrace the future. This kind of no-man’s-land is an incredibly dangerous place to be. Transformation is powerful, but to be effective it has to be swift and well managed. Transformation isn’t the goal. Getting to growth is. Enter brand, one of the most powerful change tools at a leader’s disposal. When executed well, branding is a catalyst for swift, highly tactile change that is capable of impacting on every corner of a company. It’s a great multiplier. A strong brand helps create unity, alignment and clarity, igniting a coordinated process of change that elevates the entire organisation’s efforts and impact.Brace for immediate impactThe moment a brand project is initiated, if structured correctly, it creates value by aligning leadership teams, helping them frame an opportunity together, and agreeing on what’s needed to realise it. Using open creative methods, teams --- ### Page: https://www.bertagency.co.uk/journal/emotion-versus-logic Title: Bert - Emotion Versus Logic - Brand - Strategy - Campaigns Meta Description: It’s an old debate: head versus heart. Imagination will take you everywhere” – Albert EinsteinIt’s an old debate: head versus heart. What you think versus what you feel. These two forces within our psyche are often portrayed as clashing – creating an inner tension and disagreement in our everyday decision-making.But our use of language is imprecise and allows much overlap. For example: how do you know if what you feel is the logical solution? Are the two things even separate at all? And does it matter? How do you choose which to satisfy? Do you even need to?The head – our conscious, rational, logical thought process – takes time and reaches decisions in a considered, analytical way. While the heart informs our decision-making quickly and reflexively, through all those emotions we know so well – joy, sadness, love, anger, guilt – the whole human condition.Trust your gutSo, how do we make the most of these two seemingly disparate aspects of our internal make-up, and how do we make them work together to our advantage, especially in our day-to-day work?As it turns out, the answer is: they already do. While emotions make establishing the difference between 'good' and 'bad' difficult, they are effective shortcuts to knowing how we think about something, and clinical studies suggest that the emotional component constitutes up to 95% of any decision-making process.Without emotions we can’t quickly and easily make decisions. Logic is all well and good, but it’s just the final piece of the decision-making puzzle, with a lot of the supporting work done through emotional input from experiences we’ve had.CreativityIn a creative agency, we want to produce the most innovative work we can. Both emotion and logic, and the dynamic relationship between them in our decision-making processes, play a huge role in our ability to do this.First of all, let’s look at emotion…'Motivational intensity' is the term used for how the strength of our emotion impacts on our level of creativity. In the Productivity, Motivation & Place Bert journal entry, we identified 'intrinsic productivity' as the metric for the level of personal interest we have in a project, and 'motivational intensity' as the metric for the strength of our emotions, which supports productivity and quality of work.As we established in that article, experiences affect our emotions, and since emotions affect our creativity, it is logical to conclude that experiences affect our creativity. Indeed, curious and surprising experiences trigger a mix of emotions which impact on our creativity in a variety of ways. The more we accept and embrace changes in our emotional state, the higher our 'affective engagement' is; that is to say, the more engaged and open we are to what we experience, feel, desire and so on. The more creative we are. So the theory goes. And now logic...To a creative, logic may seem like a barrier, but learning to use this, just as we should our emotions, can propel creativity to a new level.Being a creative thinker requires taking risks, and risks can reap big rewards, right? Right! Creativity means you’re allowed an opinion. You get to experiment. There are no limits.Logic requires analysis, time and limitation. What a bore, right? Wrong! This analysis is key to structuring all these limitless thoughts you’ve had. It is only by balancing these opinionated creations with logical time and thought that we create a finished product of holistically detailed innovation.Who can argue with a creative solution that considers all the angles?IndustryIt’s a balance that has significance beyond the creative studio of course. It has relevance across the agency landscape. Because, in our industry, emotion has a huge impact on the way things work.Emotional intelligence is the ability to control and be aware of your own emotions, and to express them appropriately to manage and align them with those around you. This involves social skills, empathy, motivation, self-regulation and self-awareness.Here at Bert, one of our values is to 'lead'. As a leader, there’s a danger of taking motivation too far – creating pressure rather than motivation – but practising the art of being emotionally intelligent through social skills and empathy enables everyone in the agency to be a leader in their own way. Now, of course, both logic and emotion also impact on everything our clients do. They know what they want (and what they don’t want), but often we discover that the really big challenge they experience is not knowing how to get there. Our purpose as an agency is to create the solutions that achieve these desires for our clients. And, crucially, it is our ability to be emotionally intelligent that enables us to understand emotion, build relationships and act in the best interest of our clients in unexpected, creative ways they may not have even considered.A case in point is Bert’s 'CoCreation' methodology, w --- ### Page: https://www.bertagency.co.uk/journal/federal-named-the-uks-most-popular-cafe Title: Bert - Federal Named the UK’s Most Popular Café - Brand - Strategy - Campaigns Meta Description: Bert client Federal has been named the UK's most popular cafe, and top 10 in the world, in a recent study. Right? The statistics aren’t encouraging. They suggest that the majority of change initiatives fail to meet their intended objectives. More so, evidence suggests that in the majority of cases, the impact of change deteriorates relatively rapidly. So, what can be done to create real, lasting change in organisations?Through both research and practice, we’ve found that change projects are most successful when companies focus on eight key actions.Organisations that follow each stage with rigour almost always create change with a deep, substantial impact that significantly outweighs the investment – change that endures. We call this real change. What is real change?By definition, change means to ‘make something different’. It can often be superficial – altering the appearance without impacting on the core. Transformation, on the other hand, suggests something deeper. It implies ‘a marked change in form, nature or appearance’. But the term has become a little overused, losing some of its intended power. Branding can deliver a significant change, creating a ripple effect that enhances multiple aspects of an organisation. This in turn becomes a catalyst for deeper business transformation. We prefer to call this real change – an approach that leads to meaningful, substantial shifts in how companies operate and engage with their audiences. How is real change created? We designed a path to creating real change in 2014 and have since put this into practice in over 150 change projects. We’ve also tested this against the models of some of the world’s largest companies, and in places where we’ve been influenced by them. Whatever formula you follow, a clear pattern emerges. Real change can be designed. Is getting there easy? Not always. To the greatest extent, the journey depends on your people’s readiness for change. And even the best-prepared companies go through a change cycle (which you can read about in our upcoming ‘Stages of change’ article). Our experience shows that focusing on the following key actions will set you on the right path.1. AlignmentReal change starts with the people who drive your business. Aligning leadership teams around a core set of strategic truths – purpose, mission, values and priorities – is essential. When leaders are united in their view of what the future needs to be, they can use their individual expertise to drive change in their teams and departments. Equally, they can recruit disciples for change, to accelerate and increase the likelihood of success in the process. 2. Shared visionSome prefer purpose – some vision – some use mission alone. While the textbook definitions are different, they talk to an organising idea that compels and unites people, that motivates people (internally and externally) towards achieving something greater than they could achieve in isolation. It acts as a compass for decision-making and helps teams adapt to challenges. When everyone understands where the organisation is heading, it creates a sense of belonging and purpose, fostering alignment across all levels. Communication of this is essential. It shouldn’t be reduced to straplines. Read our views on the importance of a ‘vivid vision’ in our upcoming article.3. Clear rolesModern consulting sometimes overlooks the importance of the how, focussing too heavily on the why. Clear roles and responsibilities ensure everyone knows how their work contributes to the company’s vision. This improves efficiency, reduces conflict, and increases employee engagement. When roles are well defined, collaboration thrives, and stakeholder trust is strengthened.4. Freedom to focusFocus is an increasingly scarce trait in companies. It’s crucial to create the conditions where employees can single-mindedly focus on what matters, free from distractions. Focus leads to higher productivity, greater job satisfaction, and improved decision-making. When teams are allowed the freedom to focus, they produce better quality work and generate more creative ideas.5. Open creativityReal change doesn’t happen in a boardroom. While ideas may start there, the actual transformation requires the active participation of your teams. Employees aren’t just participants in the change – they are the change. When employees feel empowered to engage with and shape the brand, they become advocates who drive the change authentically.Research from McKinsey shows that companies with highly engaged workforces achieve 147% higher earnings per share than their competitors. And Bain & Company’s studies reveal that companies with engaged employees are 21% more profitable. Involving employees from the outset fosters ownership and motivation, making the change not only effective but also enduring.6. Internal activationEngagement within your organisation should be bold, inspiring and tangible. When launching a new initiative, equip people with the right tools to get involved and ensu --- ### Page: https://www.bertagency.co.uk/journal/rituals Title: Bert - Rituals - Brand - Strategy - Campaigns Meta Description: We were appointed by global retailer Rituals to create the motion identity for the House of Rituals, a flagship lifestyle concept store in Amsterdam. A rebrand is one of the most significant decisions a company can make. It’s a transformational moment for the business and a career-defining move for those leading the charge. Yet, rebrands are often undertaken with a low understanding of the potential impact, leading to inefficient processes, poor return on investment, and, in some cases, a net-negative result. Is a rebrand ever the right decision?Marketing columnist Mark Ritson recently wrote: "When is a good time to rebrand? Never!" These attention-grabbing headlines aren’t technically correct. But they’re effective. Why? Because they have the desired result of grabbing the attention of leaders who have one finger hovering nervously over a large, red ‘rebrand’ button. What Ritson and others know when it comes to rebranding is that exercising caution is key.The power of rebranding In some cases, rebranding is a powerful tool to kickstart transformation. Many of today’s best-known companies – Google, Amazon, Pepsi for example – have rebranded to incredible effect. Rebranding is a highly visible, valuable way of harnessing the resources required for strategic change. But rebrands won’t mask a toxic organisation or culture. They’re not an elixir for falling revenue. They shouldn’t ever be used in isolation. They’re the start of a process, not an outcome. And they should never, ever be implemented without thorough, experienced strategic guidance. What is rebranding? A rebrand is a strategic initiative that results in a significant change to a company’s identity. It goes beyond logo and visual identity, often encompassing refinements or changes to aspects of a business, including name, messaging, positioning, and product and service offerings. Rebrands are typically driven by significant changes in corporate strategy or direction, such as mergers, acquisitions, a shift in target audience, or the need to overcome outdated perceptions. It’s a bold step designed to realign the brand with its business objectives and redefine how it is perceived in the market.Brand evolution/Brand refresh vs rebranding In contrast, a brand evolution (sometimes referred to as a brand refresh) is a more gradual and considered refinement of a brand. Instead of starting from scratch, it builds on existing brand equity while modernising elements such as design, tone of voice or positioning to stay relevant. Evolving a brand subtly over time is widely recognised and proven to be best practice. It is an approach that builds upon audiences’ memory structures while predicting or adapting to changing audience expectations, technological advancements, market conditions or competitive landscapes without negatively impacting on equity. Brand expansion vs rebrandingA brand expansion is the process of extending and deepening a brand’s identity without altering its core. Unlike a rebrand, which reshapes the brand from the ground up, or a brand evolution, which adapts existing elements, a brand expansion introduces new ways for the brand to express itself –particularly where its presence may be underdeveloped. For example, very few brands have fully considered motion design. Put simply, they are static in a moving world. We often help our clients expand their brand identity by defining their motion identity guidelines and systems. This helps organisations produce stronger content for channels such as Meta and YouTube and outdoor advertising at speed and scale. Expanding a brand’s toolkit through motion, sound, spatial design and other sensory elements allows it to show up more powerfully across digital and physical spaces. In today’s ‘double-win’ world, where it’s clear that brand impacts on both brand metrics and performance marketing metrics, developing flexible distinctive assets beyond the logo, colour palette and typography is essential. Brand expansion ensures every touchpoint contributes to distinctiveness, memorability and competitive advantage. Brand process comparison: rebranding vs brand evolution vs brand expansionCTA: Should I rebrand? Measure your rebrand readinessAny leader considering a rebrand should undertake an analysis of the brand first. If this is you, we’ve created a decision-making framework to help you understand your readiness and forecast the potential impact of the work. Get startedRebranding and the seven (deadly) scenariosIf brand evolution and brand expansion are best practice, where does rebranding come in? We’ve identified seven scenarios where rebranding can be used as a powerful tool to unlock growth. Scenario 1: You got it wrong! When was the last time you "just BackRubbed it"? Met your dream date on Matchbox? Or watched your favourite show on Cadabra Prime? These companies – now known as Google, Tinder and Amazon, respectively – show that even the most successful organisations can get branding wrong initially. Often a logo represents an organisation’s strategy, positioning or ethos --- ### Page: https://www.bertagency.co.uk/journal/ten-years-three-stripes Title: Bert - Ten Years, Three Stripes - Brand - Strategy - Campaigns Meta Description: We're celebrating ten years of working with Adidas. Whether you’re looking to modernise your brand or shift your market focus, a successful rebrand requires careful planning and execution. This article provides a comprehensive guide to navigating the rebranding process and ensuring a successful transition. When is it Time to Rebrand?Rebranding is a significant undertaking and should not be done lightly. Consider rebranding if:Market Conditions Have Changed: Shifts in market trends or consumer behaviour may necessitate a rebrand to stay relevant.Your Brand No Longer Reflects Your Business: If your brand no longer aligns with your company’s mission or values, a rebrand can help realign perceptions. You’re Facing Negative Perceptions: If your brand is associated with negative perceptions or controversies, rebranding can help restore your image.‍1. Assessing the Need for RebrandingBefore diving into the rebranding process, conduct a thorough assessment:Evaluate Your Current Brand: Analyse your existing brand’s strengths and weaknesses. Gather feedback from customers, employees, and stakeholders to understand their perceptions.Define Objectives: Clearly outline the goals you want to achieve with the rebrand. These could include reaching new markets, changing brand perception, or revitalising your image.‍2. Developing a Rebranding StrategyA successful rebrand requires a well-thought-out strategy:Research and Analysis: Conduct market research to understand industry trends, competitor positioning, and customer expectations.
